The cheeks prevent the bit from being pulled through the mouth, making the bit sit very quietly in the horse's mouth. The bit also avoids inconvenient pressure on the back teeth. The cheeks make it useful for turning aids especially with young horses. This works by gentle pressure being applied against the face on the outside of turn supports the ride's aids making turns much easier for the horse to understand and for the rider to carry out.
